Handy Hints and Tips

To get you set up and started with the Home Decorators Kit.

Standard paint pad set. Large, medium and small paint pads.

PREPARING YOUR PAINTING PADS

Before 1st use make sure that any loose bristles are removed from the tri-fibre paint pad ... by rubbing the surface of the pad with the back of a butter knife blade or paint scraper ... anything smooth and flat. When you can see that there are no more loose fibres ... your paint pads are ready for use.

LOADING THE BRUSHES

Various size paint pads being loaded with paint.

New paint pads should be primed by loading them twice over the loading roller then gently scuffing the paint off on the end of the tray ... repeat once more so that you can see a tiny bit of paint on all of the bristles ... Now the paint pad is ready to go!

Load the brush twice over the roller ... end to end both times and in the same direction so that you know you're loading the whole pad.

That's enough paint to do about 1 square metre on a painted surface ... any raw surface is very thirsty so your coverage rate will be a little less.

PAINT MIXING - WATER BASED ACRYLIC PAINTS

Acrylic house paints tend to thicken with age so you will find that the consistency varies quite a bit from can to can.

The Easi-Paint system will give you the best results when the paint you are working with is mixed to the consistency of thickened pouring cream.

If I'm doing a big job ... I pour a little of the paint into a seal-able container ... and add the water into the can ... just half a cup at a time ... stir it thoroughly ... add more water if necessary ... until the paint runs off the stirring stick like thickened cream. (If you mix the paint too thin it can be thickened up again using the paint in the sealed container)

If I'm doing a small job ... I use a small painters bucket and only mix what I need.

Q. What happens when the paint is too thick?

  • The paint loading roller doesn't turn freely in the tray ... and the pad isn't loaded evenly.
  • The large brush is hard to use and feels like it's dragging ... so you have to press harder.
  • The finish is uneven and streaky.

A. Add a little more water ... mix thoroughly and try again. The brush should feel like it's flowing across the surface ... leaving a smooth finish.

If the paint can't be thinned for whatever reason, and is extremely thick, we have a specialised painting pad to handle this called a ripple pad; capable of handling paint thats in a thick mud like state.

For more detailed information see Mixing & Thinning the paint in the 'HOW TO (Easi Paint)' blog.
